Kibaki assures on security during elections

President Kibaki has said government will ensure security of its citizens during electioneering.
He said the State will mobilise officers from all government security agencies to ensure a peaceful General Election on March 4.
A meeting between the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the National Police Service Commission and the Provincial Administration will be held to discuss security during the upcoming party nominations and the election proper.
The President was speaking during a meeting with the IEBC at his Harambee House office Wednesday.
IEBC chairman Isaack Hassan briefed the President on preparations for the next elections.
President Kibaki emphasised the need for urgent voter education saying it was critical that Kenyans get as much information as possible to allow them make informed decisions.
While briefing the President, the IEBC chairman underlined some of the highlights of his commission’s preparedness for the elections.
Mr Hassan noted that the commission managed to register 14.9 million voters with the inspection of voters register scheduled to start on January 15.
He said a total of 33,000 polling stations have been established with each expected to cater for a maximum of 450 voters.
The chairman also noted that procurement of materials that the commission requires has been finalised.
He also observed that nomination venue for presidential candidates will be at KICC while those of the other seats will be at the county levels.
Mr Hassan said election results will be released on real time basis with access for all media outlets with also printouts being available in case of a BVR kit breakdown.
Present during the meeting were Internal Security minister Katoo ole Metito, Justice minister Eugene Wamalwa, Head of Civil Service Francis Kimemia, Attorney General Githu Muigai among other senior government officers.
